Located in the foothills, the town is surrounded by the Pike National Forest to the west. While it’s less than thirty minutes from downtown Colorado Springs, Monument still has a quieter, more relaxed ambiance. You’ll find many local brands that have established roots here, as well as a bustling farmers’ and artisan’s market.
Monument is a Statutory Town, meaning it lacks a Home Rule Charter. The Monument Town Council is comprised of seven elected Trustees and a mayor. Trustees and the mayor serve four-year terms. In addition to a mayor, there are several other public board members in the city.
The city is also home to the Chief Paduke statue. This statue, located on Jefferson near 19th Street, was originally on Broadway. It was donated by the Paducah DAR chapter in 1909 and dedicated May 19, 1937. The statue’s historical marker reads that “Chew Paduke was a friendly chief, whose land had been acquired by Gen. William Clark, who founded Paducah.” Lorado Taft, the sculptor of the statue, combined elements of several Indian tribes in its execution.
