If you love craft beer, you can find it in Monument. The Pikes Peak Brewery is a Colorado-based business that specializes in craft beers. The brewery opened in 2011 and specializes in traditional styles of beer, with country-inspired ingredients. Its name comes from the local mountains, which provide inspiration for its ales. Located on the I-25 corridor between Colorado Springs and Denver, Monument is an unassuming town that deserves more attention. Located in the foothills, the town is surrounded by the Pike National Forest to the west. Monument is a Statutory Town, meaning it lacks a Home Rule Charter. The Monument Town Council is comprised of seven elected Trustees and a mayor. Trustees and the mayor serve four-year terms. Vacancies are filled by appointment or by voters in a special election. Term limits for trustees and the mayor are set at two consecutive terms. In addition to a mayor, there are several other public board members in the city.
The city is also home to the Chief Paduke statue. This statue, located on Jefferson near 19th Street, was originally on Broadway. It was donated by the Paducah DAR chapter in 1909 and dedicated May 19, 1937. The statue’s historical marker reads that “Chew Paduke was a friendly chief, whose land had been acquired by Gen. William Clark, who founded Paducah.” Lorado Taft, the sculptor of the statue, combined elements of several Indian tribes in its execution.
